Buying Guide: What To Consider When Choosing Bow Saw

Bow Saw

Any hardware store or online retailer will have a vast assortment of saws, many of which are corded or cordless. Despite this, the bow saw is the best choice for gardeners, survivalists, framers, and roofers due to its simplicity, affordability, and portability. Though the best bow is a basic tool, there are several features worth examining. Here are some crucial factors to consider when buying a bow saw.

a) Blades

Teeth Per Inch (TPI) (teeth per inch). So, more teeth means a smoother cut. TPI blades can have sawdust stuck in the gullets or gaps between teeth, slowing down cutting and overheating the blade (shortening its life span). Bow saw blades are extremely coarse, ranging from 3 to 14 TPI, enabling for quick, violent cuts. Low TPI blades are appropriate for greenwood; high TPI blades are better for timber.

Many don’t mention TPI. Instead, the bow saw blade is either wet or dry cut. Wet wood binds the blade, therefore this blade has fewer teeth (lower TPI). “Raker-set” means each pair is offset. Raker-set blades cut broader, removing waste. Unlike many other saw blades, a bow saw often cuts in both directions.

It pays to look around for replacement bow saw blades. Costlier equals better quality saw blades. Cheap bow saw blades rarely cut well and are cheap.

b) Tension Adjusters

A bow saw blade needs to be tensioned to cut efficiently. The saw will be difficult to control and cuts will wander if it is not straight. This is critical for cutting two-by-fours for partition walls or larger beams for roofs.

Originally, the bow saw was tensioned by twisting a string or thin wire. And the frame drew. It worked but had a flaw that need replacement. On most modern metal-framed bow saws, the handle end has an adjustable screw or a cam lever (or both). The former allows fine tuning of blade tension. Contrary to popular belief, the latter method (which closes by pulling taut) does not require any pre-drilled holes.

c) Hand Guards

A bow saw can be used to prune trees, trim storm-damaged branches, and saw logs. These tasks normally require a quick full stroke. It’s a quick move, yet it can result in knuckle damage.

The best bow saws have knuckle guards. A simple flat metal band is generally used on low-cost models. It’s molded into the handle on better ones. If you’re wearing gloves, make sure your hand can fit between the frame/handle and the knuckle guard.

Quality folding bow saws are an exception. Because they must fold flat, a knuckle guard cannot be included.

d) Frames

Most bow saw frames are constructed of steel tube for strength and longevity. Although prone to rust, they are usually powder-coated with a protective plastic skin. Especially folding bow saws are built of aluminum. It’s not as robust as steel but is much lighter, making it ideal for camping or hiking.

An open bow is the most prevalent shape. The maximum log or branch diameter is defined by the gap between the blade and the back of the frame. There are also triangle bow saws. Roofers like these because they can get into tight spots (like between branches). When unfolded, folding bow saws have a triangular pattern, however some are trapezoids (a straight-sided bow).

e) Projects

Bow saws are classified by blade length. Compact 12-inch models have a limited cutting capacity but are suitable as an alternative to a pruning saw when dealing with large bushes or small fruit trees. This makes them ideal for an RV tool pack. A 36-inch bow saw can cut through heavy beams and topple trees up to 18 inches in diameter (the generally accepted maximum cut is equal to half the blade length).

Many projects that need a bow saw can be completed with a chainsaw. However, bow saws are far cheaper, lighter, and require no fuel (save perhaps a nice breakfast). Bow saws may be a rapid and efficient tool in the right hands.
