Laser particle counters and meters are usually air particle counters. By utilizing a laser with optics designed for counting a laser particle meter can do analysis and measurement on air born particles. Most common fields of use include: clean rooms, mini environments, IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) firms and for FDA applications.

Laser particle counters (particle meters) and meters count, analyze and size aerosol particles from analysis of the light that is scattered while single particles pass across a beam of light. The detector within the meter or laser particle counter collects this light in a absolute angular array and generates a voltage pulse which is balanced to the scale of light amassed. The signal processor next amplifies the pulses and catagorizes them into a few discrete voltage bins to acquire a pulse height distribution analysis. A group of comparators perform analysis on the pulse height distribution to the threshold voltages validated by calibration, and the pulse height distribution is finally converted to particle size distribution and reported as tabulated data. With a referred to aerosol flow rate, the aerosol concentration can be analyzed by counting the quantity of the scattering events per unit time. Items that can be calculated by a laser partcle counter or meter are: particle size, particle measurement, particle distribution, particle analysis, particle count, particle sizing and particle size analysis.

Small self contained particle counter that is easily transported and used. Handeld particle counters is a self contained meter that can be carried by the user. Although they are use for the same applications as most portable units, handheld counters usually have lower flow rates, so longer sample times may be required. Sample probe(s) are attached directly to most hand held particle meters and some offer the ability to use additional probes. Due to lower flow rates it is highly recommended for addional probes to go no further than six feet away from the meter.

Remote counters are used where continuous monitoring of environments is required. Remote paricle size measurement, analysis, count, sizing and distribution is handled through network of systems and information is aquired and processed by an FMS (facility monitoring system), data acquisition software or analysis software. Remote systems open up an entire world of abilities including; remote or onsight alarms, database integration, text and cell notificiation, email notification as well as multiple remote meters being networked together.
